Recyling at the Healey

Recycling plays a major role in managing the garbage generated in homes and it reduces the need for landfills and incinerators. It also reduces the environmental impact of industrial production, supplies industry with recycled materials, reduces greenhouse gases and other dangerous air and water pollutants, and conserves scare natural resources. For example, every ton of paper recycled saves up to 17 trees, 79 gallons of oil, and 7000 gallons of water.

The Healey Building has taken an active role in creating a greener environment. Recycle bins have been placed in the garbage room.

Please participate in the program; ultimately it will save the association money if we can reduce the number of regular trash pick ups.

Place only the following items in the recycle bins:

  1. PAPER, including cardboard and magazines,
  2. PLASTICS, including bottles but only those with the #1 and #2 symbols;
  3. ALUMINUM cans; and (4) STEEL cans. Group all four categories together and placed them in the marked cans for pickup each Wednesday.

No other materials are allow in the recycle bins. Items such as glass, non-authorized plastics, styrofoam, aluminum foil, soil paper products, and household garbage are not allowed.

Recycling service is being contracted with Waste Industries. See Jan 2009 management memo for info (PDF).

Begin separating your waste now and very soon it will become a habit. The waste management company has made it as simply as possible for you to participate. We have a waste problem in this country and around the world, let us do our part to help solve it.

Note on "e-Waste":

The association does not recycle E-waste and it should not be disposed of in the regular trash. No monitors, no computers, no TVs! The association has to pay extra for these items to be removed. We ask if these items belong to you, please retrieve them and dispose of them properly.

  • There are many E waste recycling programs available, and will take them at no cost, such as at Grady High school (3rd Saturday of every month)
  • Items which are still functional can also be donated to organizations such as the Salvation Army 746 Marietta St NW, Atlanta, GA 404-523-6214.

Avoid Fines - Put Stuff Where It Belongs!
6/1/09

We are now about one month into our new and improved recycling service and have some important information to share with you.

As instructed previously, separate all paper products into one bin, all metal, glass and plastic into another. Dividing our recyclables into two containers could not be simpler and yet, despite the fact that there is a large grey garbage/refuse dumpster in the same room, there is evidence that some residents are NOT always adhering to the recycling guidelines and are putting garbage into the recycling bins.

Recyclables cannot include any food and should ideally be rinsed. If your recyclables are contaminated with food, please put them in the grey garbage/refuse dumpsters.

Unless we find evidence that a particular resident is violating these very simple sorting rules, the Healey HOA will be forced to pay $50 per occurrance to our recycling contractor, Conex, who will not tolerate contaminated recyclables. This hurts everyone. Please, be careful about contamination and owners, if you have a tenant, or guest using your condo, please make sure they know the sorting guidelines.

Thank you.
